On the northeastern tip of Kauai, you will find the coastal village of Kilauea, an exquisite destination with lots of nature to explore, beautiful beaches, landmarks, and outdoor things to do such as hiking, swimming, horseback riding, kayaking, surfing, and more.
It’s well worth the adventure to the north end of the island to spend some time in this scenic and charming town, about a 30-minute drive from our resort rentals on Waipouli Beach.
Below are five amazing Kilauea attractions that visitors come far and wide to experience, but there are many more in the area to explore.
Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens
Location: 4101 Wailapa Rd., Kilauea, Kauai, HI
The Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens offer a Kilauea experience like none other. If you’re not up for one of the island’s big hikes, walk this garden path for a taste of Kauai’s rainforest. With the smells and ambiance of a tropical forest in the air, this path opens to a wide stretch of northern Kauai coast.
On the guided tours, you will be taken through the botanical history of the island and see the remarkable diversity of habitats and flora and fauna here. Here you’ll find live orchids, tropical birds, and a stunning lagoon by the ocean.
Once the landscape project of Joyce and Ed Doty, the Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens has turned into 240 acres of gardens with incredible bronze sculptures, farmland, meadows, and hardwood tree parks. These renowned gardens are a highlight of any trip to Kilauea. A visit costs $10 per person. Children four and under are free.
Silver Falls Ranch
Location: 2888 Kamookoa Rd., Kilauea, HI
There are plenty of jungle tours but if horseback riding Indiana Jones-style through a dense tropical forest is your thing, book a tour with Silver Falls Ranch.
You won’t just see the rainforest on this tour but also the stunning views of the Makaleha Mountains looming high above the ocean. Different tour packages offer unique trips through the isolated Silver Falls, a trail to the base of Mount Makaleha, or a private party ride to any destination you desire, as long as it’s safe.
Tours can be booked for about $99 to $150 per person. Call (808) 828-6718 for tour details and to reserve.
Sugarloaf Pineapple Farm
Location: 6020 Koolau Rd., Kilauea, Kauai, HI
Sugarloaf Pineapples are world famous, but have you ever thought about how they’re grown? Learn all about it at the Sugarloaf Pineapple Farm, one of Kauai’s landmarks.
This modest farm has only recently begun to offer tours for visitors who want to see how the juicy pineapples are harvested.
Guests will plant their own pineapple. They will also get to taste ripe pineapple right from the harvest. To end the tour, guests are treated to an original pineapple frozen drink. Now you can say you saw a real pineapple farm on the coast of Kauai.
The tour lasts about two hours and is $60 for adults, $30 for ages 17 and under, and free for children 3 and under. Tours are only available on Thursdays at 10 a.m. Reservations are required. Visit the information page at the website for more details.
Anaina Hou Community Park
Location: 5-2723 Kuhio Hwy, Kilauea, Kauai, HI
At the Anaina Hou Community Park, visitors can take a journey on the Wai Koa Loop to view the landmarks, taking them through bridges, lush jungle, and waterfalls of northern Kauai.
The small café at the end of the trail is the perfect place to find incredible local gelato. The 18-hole mini-putt course will test the skills of the whole family.
To top it off, on weekends there’s a market that sells fresh bread, vegetables, and other local goods for visitors to take back to their resort rentals on Waipouli Beach. It’s a low-cost trip to an unforgettable community park.
Hawaiian Organic Noni Farm
Location: 11 Larson Beach Rd, Kilauea, HI 96754
