A big plus is that many courses are located not far from the best Kauai rentals, such as the Waipouli Beach Resort and Spa, with top amenities and features that will contribute to your unforgettable Hawaiian trip.
Wailua Municipal Golf Course
Rated the #3 course in Hawaii by The Golf Channel, #13 by Golfweek, and #15 as one of the best golf courses in Hawaii by Golf Digest, Wailua Municipal Golf Course offers classic holes in an oceanside setting. Starting life as a 9-hole course in the 1930s, the course was expanded to 18 holes in 1961.
Wailua Municipal Golf Course is for you if you’re looking for a relaxed atmosphere, an easily walkable layout, and a moderate challenge. You’ll love the gentle slopes of the back nine! The course offers one of the best bargains on Kauai, with nonresident weekday and weekend rates very reasonable.
Under municipal care, the course is well maintained, continually improving the playing conditions. Besides a golf shop, there’s a chipping green, putting green, practice bunker and locker room with showers. No cash? No problem; there’s an ATM on site.
Puakea Golf Course
Hailed as what may be the “most fun course to play in Hawaii” by a noted golf course architect who helped to change the face of Hawaii’s golf landscape, Puakea Golf Course provides a great experience amid gentle slopes, deep ravines, giant sinkholes, six ponds, and lush tropical surroundings, all with stunning pali and ocean views spread across its more than 6,900 yards. Throw in the tradewinds, and you’re in for a challenge!
Separate from the course is a spacious practice area, with its 18-hole layout, new driving range, putting green, and practice green complete with various slopes. This is an excellent place for beginners or for seasoned players where they get their game on BEFORE they get their game on…if that is, they can take their eyes from the spectacular view of the Wai’ale’ale Mountain Range.
Puakea Golf Course features a pro shop and clubhouse. Rental clubs are available.
Poipu Bay Golf Course
You’d be hard-pressed to find another course on Kauai, or anywhere for that matter, to match the sheer grandeur of the Poipu Bay Golf Course. From its location on a plateau above the Pacific Ocean to its surroundings of both cliffs and mountainsides, the course is truly one of a kind.
The course is filled with bunkers, grassy hollows, deep roughs, slopes, and ponds, and depending on the hole, you can either make shots into the winds or have them at your back. There are some distractions, too, in addition to the stunning views, such as glimpses of monk seals, humpback whales, and Nene Geese. Any golfer can momentarily lose their focus in these conditions, but it’s well worth it.
Poipu can spoil you with an in-cart satellite navigation system that gives you an exact measurement of the distance between the hole and pin placement, not to mention clinics and lessons provided by experienced pros.
Makai Golf Club at Princeville
This first solo design by renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr., has landed this course atop nearly every golf ranking out there, making it perhaps the best among the public golf courses on Kauai. These accolades include Top 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses in America by Golf Digest and the Top 3 Best Courses You Can Play in Hawaii by GolfWeek.
The course conditions are described as “immaculate” and so breathtaking that guided golf cart tours are given so that even visitors who might not play can take in the lush landscape and unparalleled views. Six of the course’s 18 holes are oceanfront.
Makai Golf Club at Princeville has two oversized practice tees, a practice fairway bunker, a teaching tee, and a practice complex for your short game. Golfers can also rent new Callaway Golf clubs.
