Things to Do in the Town of Waimea on Kauai’s West Shore

If you are staying at one of our top Kauai resorts on Kauai’s west shore, there is plenty for you to see and do, so you don’t have to venture too far. The town of Waimea is a bustling place to explore with your loved ones!

What is There to Do on the Way to the West Shore of Kauai?

If you are staying on the eastern or southern shores of the island, getting to the Waimea is going to be a drive. BUT you’re on vacation and there is gorgeous scenery wherever you look on Kauai. Cruising around the island is a great way to take in the sights and unwind, so here are just a few things to do on your way West.

Monk Seal in Kauai

You can stop by the famous South Shore hot spots. Kauai’s south shore is known for having plenty of sun to soak up, which makes Poipu Beach the perfect place for frolicking. Here you can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, surfing or engage in other water activities. A sandbar divides the beach where it’s clear to spot Hawaiian monk seals and even Humpback whales!

Many visitors also enjoy the beautiful McBryde and Allerton gardens located at the National Tropical Botanical Garden. What trip to Hawaii would be complete without visiting one of the hundreds of beautiful gardens? Discover the Moreton bay figs and Jurassic park trees or visit the mermaid room or bamboo grove; all are sure to be astonishing.

About Waimea

Waimea is a quiet town on the outskirts of the state parks that takes up a large section of the island. It has a laid-back atmosphere and is a great place to stop and refuel after hitting a trail or driving around.

Waimea is known for its hiking terrain in the Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park.

Best Places to Eat in Waimea

There are not fine-dining spots in Waimea since it is more of a local haunt, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t great culinary experiences to be had here.

JoJo’s Shaved Ice is among the top spots on the island. The “best shaved ice” on Kauai is a popular question and one that will get you strong opinions. If you are in the westside, JoJo’s is definitely one you don’t want to miss. If you want to do a shaved ice tour, head to the North Shore to the Wishing Well for a comparison.

For lunch, we recommend the Shrimp Station for fresh seafood and outdoor dining to enjoy the weather. This place is casual – like paper plates and picnic tables, but there is a reason locals line up for this place. As you may have guessed, the thing to order off the menu is anything with shrimp.

But if you’re looking for a slightly more variety, Island Taco is just across the road and is another fan favorite. This is also a tiny spot, but no one seems to mind. They have outdoor seating as well and can accommodate dietary restrictions. Want something spicy? The wasabi seared Hawaiian Tuna has a kick. Are you vegetarian? The cilantro lime tofu is delicious. The best part is new flavors are created daily, so you can visit multiple times and still have something new.

Waimea Shops and Activities

Right next to JoJo’s are a couple of great souvenir shops and there are two antique shops if you want to pick up something unique to remember your visit.

For other things to do in the area, the Waimea State Recreation Pier is a great spot to watch the sunsets or spend some time fishing.

How to Get to Waimea

From the Lihue Airport, you want to hop on HI-50 W for about 20 miles. You’ll pass through several towns with plenty of green space in between. It will be about 40 min., but the traffic can vary.
