The Ultimate Birdwatching Guide to Kauai

When searching the internet for the best Kauai things to do on your upcoming vacation, you’ll probably find tons of outdoor activities. You’ll want to pack plenty of sunscreen with all the time you’re going to spend in the sunshine! Whether you choose to spend your time by the water or hiking along the trails, one thing is for sure: you’re going to run into tons of incredible wildlife.

One of the most popular things to do in Kauai is birdwatching! Before you break out the binoculars, here’s everything you’ll want to know about Kauai birdwatching.

Kauai Wildlife Overview

Kauai is home to all kinds of beautiful wildlife, so you’re not limited to just watching birds. Of course, many of the most incredible species on and around the island are located underneath the water. Kauai has several breathtaking species of dolphins and whales, many of which you can spot right from the beach. You can also enjoy swimming with dolphins, and book a Kauai whale watching tour. You’re also likely to spot some sea turtles and monk seals while you’re in Kauai. These creatures (along with the humpback whale) are endangered, so if you spot one, consider yourself lucky!

Of course, you won’t only find wildlife in the water. There are lots of species to be observed on the dry land as well. Particularly if you go hiking or biking along the local trails, you can expect to spot any number of cats and dogs, cattle, pigs, goats, and more. You might even spot some deer or wild boar while you’re exploring. Keep in mind that many of these species are feral, so you don’t want to get too close, but it can be an amazing experience to see them from afar. Try to keep track of how many different species you can find!

Native and Non-Native Species

Now we can get into what you’re interested in: birds! Kauai is home to both native and non-native bird species that can be found throughout the island. One of the most fascinating native (or endemic) species is the Nene, also called the Hawaiian Goose. This is actually the Hawaiian state bird! There are only around 1,300 of them in the entire state of Hawaii, so consider yourself lucky if you spot one! Some of the most common native species you can find on Kauai include the Hawaiian honeycreeper, the Puaiohi, the Hawaiian stilt, the Pacific golden plover, and others.

Of course, there are also quite a few non-native (also called “introduced”) species that have been introduced to the land of Kauai. The red-crested cardinal and the white-rumped shama are the easiest to identify because of their unique color patterns. You might also be able to spot species like the rose-ringed parakeet, the green pheasant, and the red avadavat. One bird that has only been introduced to Kauai and exists on no other Hawaiian island is the greater necklaced laughingthrush, so keep your eyes peeled for this one in particular!

Where to Go Birding

But where can you even find these species in the first place? There are plenty of places on Kauai where you can go birdwatching. One of the best places for birdwatching is the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. This wildlife refuge has been welcoming guests since 1903. It is home to bird species like Hawaiian geese, Laysan albatross, Pacific golden plovers, and more. On top of the amazing bird species you’ll find, you can also see all kinds of spectacular plants and experience all the natural beauty that Kauai has to offer.

Koke’e State Park is another great spot for hiking and birdwatching. This park has seven major hiking trails, each of which can allow you to spot almost any of the species we mentioned above. You might also want to head to Waimea Canyon State Park to spot even more bird species and see some of the gorgeous natural formations on the entire island. A few other popular spots for birdwatching include the Nounou State Forest Reserve, the Lihu’e-Koloa Forest Reserve, and Wailua River State Park.

How to Protect the Island Ecosystem

While you’re observing the incredible birds and other species of wildlife to be found throughout Kauai, you’ll want to make sure you’re protecting the animals and their habitats. After all, Kauai is the oldest of all the Hawaiian Islands. All guests and residents are encouraged to help protect the local ecosystem. First, make sure you pick up after yourself when you’ve headed out birdwatching. If you finish a snack or a bottle of water while you’re out on the trail, keep your trash with you until you’re able to reach a trash can.

Additionally, for sunscreen travel tips, make sure that the sunscreen you’re using is mineral-based and doesn’t have any harsh chemicals. These chemicals can make their way into the local waters. They can do severe damage to the beautiful coral reefs in the area. Make sure you always stay on the trails when you’re birdwatching or observing other wildlife, and don’t get too close to any animal that might come your way. There will often be signs and regulations throughout the various reserves, parks, and trails that you might visit, so be sure to stick to the rules. This will guarantee both your safety and the safety of the environment.
