Hanalei pier is one of those low-key Hawaiian locations that, quite frankly, does it receive the fanfare it deserves. That’s a shame, because it’s a great spot for all kinds of activities, including swimming, surfing, picnicking, and sunset watching. Plus, the pier is rich in history as well as scenic beauty, making it a must-see stop during your Kauai vacation.
Built to Last
Hanalei pier was originally constructed in 1892. Work to expand its length began in the early years of the 20th century, eventually reaching a total of 340 feet. Local authorities replaced the original wooden deck with a new concrete structure in the 1920s. The 1940s saw the addition of a shed roof. The pier was originally meant to accommodate shipping companies bringing products to and from the island. This purpose dissolved in the early 1930s, but it was soon replaced by both locals and tourists who found the pier an irresistible place to relax and enjoy the island’s indescribable majesty. Numerous filming companies have used the pier as a favorite site for motion pictures like 1954’s Beachhead and 1957’s South Pacific. The structure survived the wrath of Hurricane Inki in 1992 and was restored to its full glory, including the canopy at the oceanfront end, in 2012-2013.
