Kauai, Hawaii vs. Maui – Which One is For You?

Hawaii is an absolutely stunning vacation destination, no matter which island you choose to visit. But many people struggle with the decision to visit Maui or Kauai. While both of these locations are incredible, they have their own distinct features that set them apart. Before you decide to book a stay on Maui or in one of the top Kauai resorts, read our guide to determine which destination is right for you.

About Maui

Maui is the second biggest island of Hawaii (just after the “Big Island” of Hawaii itself). Maui is often referred to as the “honeymooner’s isle” and is one of Hawaii’s most well-known islands. It has quite a bit of development since it’s popular with tourists, but it has maintained a secluded and relaxing vibe. People often come to Maui to relax and enjoy a romantic getaway that feels like authentic Hawaii.

Things to Do

Maui has a little bit of something for everyone. There are plenty of beaches that attract swimmers and surfers, and there are tons of places to dive in for some incredible snorkeling. What most people don’t realize is that most of Maui is farmland. These areas give guests an excellent view of the stunning Hawaiian nature, as well as the chance to try authentic Hawaiian cuisine from local farmers and chefs. You can even get active while you’re in Maui with activities like hiking and golfing.

Attractions

Nature lovers will want to take a trip on the Road to Hana. This stretch of road takes you past unbelievable red and black sand beaches and lets you admire local plant life like the bamboo forests and rainbow eucalyptus trees. You can also head to Haleakala National Park to catch a glimpse of the eponymous volcano. Take part in the Old Lahaina Luau, spot one of the country’s biggest banyan trees at Banyan Tree Park, or learn about local marine life at Maui Ocean Center.

Atmosphere

The people of Maui are used to tourists, and as such, they’re quite welcoming. The pace of life here is much slower than what we experience in the rest of the U.S. (and, really, most of the rest of the world!), but don’t let that deter you. Enjoy yourself! Depending on where you go in Maui, you may find yourself in a busy tourist center, or you mind wind up in a more relaxed part of town. There’s a bit of everything on the island. Though, the entire island tends to keep things pretty casual so that you can get away with a sundress or khakis in even the most upscale establishments.

About Kauai

Kauai is the fourth biggest and second oldest island of Hawaii. It’s often referred to as the “Garden Isle” thanks to its abundance of plant life and natural attractions. This island might look familiar to you if you’ve seen movies like Indiana Jones or Jurassic Park, as both of them shot some footage here! This island has a much more “country” feel than other Hawaiian islands and is perfect for those looking to get in touch with nature and truly escape the city’s hustle and bustle.

Things to Do

Kauai has tons of fascinating and breathtaking nature for visitors to explore. This island is ideal for the outdoor person, as you can hike, snorkel, and engage in other adventurous activities on almost all sides of Kauai. Of course, you can still enjoy the island’s beaches and spot the stunning marine life under the water. On Kauai, since things are a bit less tourist-oriented, it’s much easier to get to know the locals and find that authentic Hawaiian experience.

Attractions

Arguably the main attraction on Kauai is Waimea Canyon and Koke’e State Park. Waimea Canyon has been nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” and for a good reason! You can hike throughout the park to get an unmatched view of this 14-mile-long gorge. Hikers will also enjoy the Napali Coast and its 17 miles of cliffs that give you views you simply have to see to believe. If you’re still interested in exploring nature but want something a bit less intense, head to the Wailua River State Park. To truly relax, Polihale State Park is the perfect place to go for some uninterrupted beach time.

Atmosphere

Kauai is often considered one of Hawaii’s most well-kept secrets. Not as many tourists choose this island, so you’ll practically have the place to yourself. It might rain more here than it does on the other islands, but that’s no reason to write it off. The rains help maintain the stunning nature all around you! While you’re on Kauai, you’ll experience a laid-back atmosphere that lets you forget the worries of home. The locals are amiable, the food is simple yet delicious, and the surroundings are just plain beautiful.

What Attracts Visitors to Hawaii?

It’s no surprise that Hawaii has long been a popular vacation destination, but why? Part of it is the intrigue. While Hawaii is part of the United States, the lifestyle here is so much different than in the rest of the country, so it’s natural for visitors to be intrigued. Another huge attraction of Hawaii is the natural beauty, from the beaches to the nature parks and everything in between. Finally, when people think about Hawaii, they picture the ultimate relaxation destination. Hawaii is a place where visitors can leave their worries behind and simply enjoy the uninterrupted beauty of nature.

Cost Between Maui and Kauai

In general, the costs you encounter in Hawaii will always be more than what you’d pay in the rest of the U.S. Since it’s a state that’s completely isolated, the vast majority of items have to be shipped in, thus raising prices. However, you’ll notice that Maui is even more expensive than Kauai in most cases. This is primarily due to Maui being more popular with tourists and maintains more resorts, so those extra visitors need to be accommodated.

Which One is For You?

So, with all of that being said, which destination is right for you? If you’re searching for that classic tourist experience in Hawaii, Maui might be your best bet. This island is where you can participate in a luau, grab a souvenir on almost any corner, and experience the resort side of Hawaii.

However, if you want to be closer to nature and get a relaxing vacation, Kauai is perfect. You won’t have to deal with the big tourist crowds, you can get your food and lodging for cheaper than on Maui, and you’ll have the chance to settle down and feel like a local.
