One of the most incredible experiences you can have in Kauai is witnessing a majestic whale. These massive creatures are simply breathtaking to watch, and our Kauai beachfront rentals are in the perfect location to spot them. Read on to learn more about these beautiful animals and the best places and times to find them.
About the Whales
Kauai welcomes the Hawaiian Humpback whale, also known as Kohola, every year. They migrate from their feeding grounds in Alaska to Hawaii’s warmer conditions. You’ll have an incredible view from the shore, where they’ll come close enough for you to watch them jump out of the water for breath (and a big splash!).
Typically, baby humpback whales measure in between 10-15 feet and already weigh around 2,000 pounds. Fully grown, these whales can grow up to 50 feet or more and reach a weight of up to 90,000 pounds! Their signature sounds are incredible to hear, and they are primarily heard in three forms: pulses, whistles, and clicks.
Whale Watching Season
In Kauai, you’re likely to spot whales between December and May, with peak season between January and March. An estimated 10,000 or more whales make the trek every year, traveling over 6,000 miles to reach Hawaii’s waters! During this time, there are tons of companies that can bring you out into the water on a fantastic whale watching tour, letting you get up close to these phenomenal creatures.
Whale Watching Tours
On your tour, you’ll get to watch whales playing and splashing, and it’s especially great to see mothers playing with their young cubs! Hawaii has a 100-yard minimum law that prevents boats from getting too close to these whales, but you’ll still get to witness some spectacular sights!
One of the top whale watching tour companies in Kauai is Captain Andy’s, which has been recognized by publications such as Travel + Leisure and USA Today! They’ve been operating since 1980, taking visitors along the Na Pali Coast. Every captain is trained and knowledgeable to keep you safe and give you a fun and educational experience. You’ll also get to hear the whales’ “songs” through the hydrophones on board.
Another well-known tour company is Holo Holo Charters. Their most popular option is the Niihau and Napali Super Tour, giving you 7 hours of fun! You’ll have breakfast while heading toward the “Forbidden Island” of Niihau, where you can snorkel and look out for whales. Lunch and beverages are also provided. The combination of beautiful sights, friendly and trained captains, and fast vessels make the perfect day out.
Finally, Blue Dolphin offers whale watching tours that the whole family will love. While all of their tours include whale watching, they offer a specific 2-hour tour that you can easily fit in with your other activities. Hydrophones let you hear the whales sing, and your captain will be able to teach you all about the patterns and songs, as well as other fun facts you can impress your friends with back home.
