Haraguchi Rice Mill

Haraguchi Rice Mill is the only remaining rice mill where you will see the past meet the present. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the rice mill is a must-see during your time on Kauai. The mill is tucked away on a working wetland taro farm on Kauai’s North Shore and is found within a National Wildlife Refuge. Usually, the mill is not accessible to the public unless booked through a tour. Not only will you learn all about the rice mill process, but you will also be able to view a variety of endangered native water birds and learn about the many uses of taro.

Sustainable Agriculture on Kauai

One of the biggest things that Kauai is proud of is the sustainable agriculture that they are known for! There are so many various types of agriculture that Kauai is known for to be a completely self-sufficient island. Whether you are looking for macadamia nuts, coffee, orchids or other tropical plants, various types of fruit and vegetables, the Hawaiian farms have it all.

One of the most robust cultures on the island is the coffee culture. The farms and mills in the Kona coffee region have been around since the 1820s. All the areas around have been producing award-winning coffee beans for decades. Perhaps you know a coffee drinker at home that would enjoy some of their flavorful beans as one of the many local souvenirs you may bring home!

The Importance of Buying Local

One of the reasons that the farms and plantations of Hawaii are a significant aspect of life on Kauai is the number of people who support them by buying local. While you are staying in one of our 2 Bedroom Resort Condo Rentals on Kauai we suggest shopping like a local and supporting these local farms and plantations. Not only will you be helping to support the farmers and staff who grow and maintain the crops, but you will also be receiving some of the freshest food that the island has to offer.
